International Cervantino Festival



The International Cervantino Festival (FIC), popularly known as "El Cervantino", is a festival that has been held since 1972 in the city of Guanajuato, in the Mexican Bajío region. It has the support of the Ministry of Culture and the collaboration of the Government of the State of Guanajuato, the municipal presidency and the University of Guanajuato. hors d'oeuvres by Miguel de Cervantes, staged by the maestro Enrique Ruelas Espinosa. In the 1970s, more artistic activities were added to the traditional performances to reinforce the international dimension of the festival. Since then it has grown to become one of the four largest festivals of its kind in the world. The FIC is a member of the European Festivals Association and the Asian Theater Festivals Association. , in addition to government sponsorships, contributions from private sponsors.

The festival emphasizes literary creations in the Spanish language, which is why it maintains the original proposal that the University Theater Group of Guanajuato represent the “hors d'oeuvres”. The international aspect consists of creating a space for research and exchange. The Ballet Folklórico de México, under the direction of Amalia Hernández, has performed since its inception. The most varied shows (classical music, regional Mexican dances or acrobats Chinese) were invited from all over the world. 


Every year the festival attracts artists from all over the world who represent the typical aspects of the culture of each country. All kinds of performances find their place in the festival: opera , music and dance; theater, outdoor performances and the visual arts; cinema and literature, as well as conferences or colloquia. The festival also signed an agreement with the Montreal MUTEK Festival in order to disseminate, mainly among the Mexican public, new electronic music shows.
